The research states that blinking lights and audio sound effects such as catchy jingles may be a contributing factor to patrons making gambling decisions with a higher level of risk. The findings from this research were just published in JNeurosci. Furthermore, a trade journal for the Society for Neuroscience. It links sensory features mainly found in slot machines with the decision-making process. It also contends that this link could have an adverse effect on anyone.
Mariya Cherkasasova is the study’s lead author and she was quoted in this post as saying, “We found that an individual’s choices were less guided by the odds of winning when the casino-like audiovisual features were present in our laboratory gambling game.” The UBS postdoctoral research fellow went on to add, “Overall, people took more risks when playing the more casino-like games. Also, regardless of the odds.”
So, Is Riskier Decision Making With Food Rewards A Link To Problem Gambling?
This latest study takes place after earlier research on this same topic. Ultimately, they do their research at UBC determined using lab rats. First of all, it finds that the combination of money imagery with authentic slot machine sounds has an effect on the decision-making process.
The study’s senior author was Catherine Winstanley. Furthermore, she is a UBC professor in the Department of Psychology. Moreover, She weighed in with the following thoughts;
“Using eye-tracker technology, we were able to see that people were paying less attention to information. More specifically, the odds of winning on a particular gamble when money imagery and casino jingles accompanied the wins. We also noted that participants showed greater pupil dilation. Furthermore, she suggests that individuals were more aroused or engaged when winning outcomes were paired with sensory cues.”
Furthermore, the study concluded that participants became more cautious in the decision-making process. Also, this is an absence of these sensory cues.
