The Macau region of China is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Asia with its elaborate casino hotel and resorts. Similar to Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States, Macau has gained a reputation as a top entertainment and gambling travel destination.
Macau Casinos Expect Rise In Tourists For Upcoming Chinese Labour Day Holiday
According to a recent post on the Asia news site, the upcoming Chinese Labour Day holiday is expected to be big. So big that it could attract as many as 20 percents more visitors to this region than last year. As decreed by China’s State Council, this year’s holiday will run from May 1 through May 4. This would give mainland China residents a four-day break from work to enjoy all the festivities.
The 20 percent growth estimate was released by the city’s tourism promotion staff. It is heavily tied to travelers arriving into the region via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. This is according to Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes acting as the director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO). She echoed her sentiments to the local media last week as a way to promote the upcoming holiday.
She also released an estimate that the hotel occupancy rate for the Macau region would exceed 90 percent over the four-day period. Also included in her comments was mention of the work that has been done promoting the area with airlines and other transportation companies. The goal is to extend the stay for many out of town travelers.
Overnight guests will provide a bigger boost to the economy that day trippers according to local travel research. However, day trippers have helped increase Macau’s first-quarter visitor arrivals by an estimated 21 percent. That has resulted in nearly $10.4 million in tourism spending.
The inbound tourism figures for 2019 have “far exceeded” earlier projections according to Ms. Fernandes. Official data collected by MGTO projected that close to 4.75 million arrivals into the region were by overnight travelers. The figure for day trippers was estimated to be 5.6 million.
Hotel Occupancy Rate Macau Hotels
Going back to last year’s travel figures for the holiday that ran from April 29 through May 1, Macau received over 391,000 tourists. That was an increase of 4.7 percent against the holiday in 2017. These numbers were derived by the city’s Public Security Police at that time. It was added that almost 92 percent of those visitors came from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The visitors from these three regions increased by 7.6 percent in 2018 according to this report.
Taking a closer look at the hotel occupancy rate for the 2018 holiday, it reaches 94.3 percent. Ultimately, this figure includes Macau hotels and guesthouses. Also in data collected by MGTO for that holiday period was an average room rate of $200.
Indeed, you should note that most of Macau’s five-star casino hotel and resorts are experiencing a strong increase in advanced bookings. Furthermore, most of these casino gambling resorts are in Cotai. Moreover, GGRAsia gathers this information from the official booking websites of these major casino properties.
