Does This Women Steal $680,000 To Play Mobile Gambling Game That Doesn't Pay Out Real Cash
Mobile gaming addiction is no joke and it’s been a growing problem in all parts of the world. The latest example of how dangerous these issues are comes from Australia, where a woman stole $680,000 just to feed her addiction and be able to play mobile gambling games.

Woman Pleads Guilty to Stealing $680,000

Rachel Naomi Perri, a former account manager at a veterinary hospital, pleaded guilty to several fraud charges on Monday. Allegedly, she used her position at the hospital to still near $680,000. Perri spent all the stolen money on mobile gaming. What’s interesting is that the game she was playing didn’t even feature real money payouts.

Mrs. Perri was charged with “25 counts of computer-related fraud and 1 count of fraud.” The accusations of 475 fraudulent transactions during her time at the hospital were brought against her. She worked there as an account manager from 2016 to 2019 and reportedly stole a total amount of AUD940,221 or $680,000.

She used the money she stole to support her addiction and play Heart of Vegas, an online casino game. Heart of Vegas is not a classic gaming portal, but rather just a video game with simulated casino slot machines. This means that there was no real money to be won. Perri poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into a game where the only reward was the in-game currency. This virtual currency had no value in the real world and couldn’t be exchanged for real money. Son, no matter, how much she invested or won, she didn’t see a dime of real cash from this game.

The terms and conditions of the Heart of Vegas game are clearly listed on their website. They state that the game is for adult audiences only and doesn’t offer any real cash prizes. Terms further state that it’s a social gaming experience where winning doesn’t imply success in actual casino games.

Long-Lasting Severe Gambling Disorder

Rachel Perry has been struggling with mobile gaming addiction for quite some time. She stated at the court that she’s been diagnosed with a severe gambling disorder. Stealing money from the veterinary hospital she worked at was not the only case of her wrongdoing. She also fraudulently took out a credit card in her husband’s name. The card had a $30,000 limit and she managed to run up a $24,000 debt, all used for the Heart of Vegas. In addition, she confessed at court to taking out other multiple loans and credit cards which only increased her debt. She immediately pleaded guilty to all charges, adding that she was aware that her fraudulent behaviors can’t last forever. Perri’s lawyer, Greg Barns, said that her addiction and fascination with gambling have lasted for years ever since she first won $26 on a video poker game.

Still, she was able to get away with it for three full years. The suspicions at the veterinary hospital rose only when she was made redundant in 2019. At that time, hospital administrators discovered anomalies with her banking statements. For three years, Perri ciphered hospital funds into different accounts and credit cards, all listed in her name. At the moment, Rachel Naomi Perri is awaiting her sentence which should be announced next month.
