Las Vegas always has been and will most likely remain the real money casino gambling capital of the world. Anyone who has taken a trip to the Strip or stayed in the downtown area can attest to the fact that there is no shortage of gambling options when it comes to the overall number of Las Vegas casinos located in the general area.
In a recent post on the Las Vegas Review-Journal website, www.reviewjournal.com by Richard Velotta, the competition for real money casino gambling in the state of Connecticut and the New England area in general heated up towards the end of August with the grand opening of MGM Springfield in Springfield, Massachusetts. This is the latest offering from MGM Grand Resorts International, based out of Las Vegas.
When Will Las Vegas Heavyweights Dials-Up the Competition in New England Market?
One of the biggest players in the worldwide casino industry decided to stoke that fire with a banner at Bradley International, which is the airport serving the Hartford, Connecticut area. It simply as the question if you wanted to go to a casino resort in the middle of town or in the middle of nowhere. According to this report, this statement was made in reference to the two existing tribal casinos on forested reservation land in the more rural southeastern part of the state. Those two Native American Tribal casinos are the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s Foxwoods Resort and Casino and the Mohegan Indian Tribe’s Mohegan Sun. It is still too early to gauge the impact of MGM Springfield on these two Connecticut gambling venues, but common sense dictates that this added level of competition from a heavyweight like MGM could takes it toll in the short-term and possibly for years to come.
Also factoring into the equation is the planned opening of the Wynn Resorts Ltd.’s Encore Boston Harbor in June of next year. This is another Las Vegas heavyweight looking to stake its claim in the entire New England area when it comes to real money casino gambling.
Healthy competition is a part of any thriving industry and the fact that there are so many Las Vegas casinos thriving in that market is a testament to just how big the gambling industry really is. According to this post, Ray Pineault acting as the president and general manager of the Mohegan Sun is taking these recent developments all in stride.
MGM and the Wynns are coming to Massachusetts
He stated, “We’ve been preparing for this for years. We understand the MGMs and the Wynns are coming to Massachusetts and they’re looking to get into this New England market because it’s been such a successful market.” Added competition is nothing new to either location in light of added casino gambling options in upstate New York and New York City, which is fairly adjacent to their primary market.
In February of this year, Resorts World Catskills opened its doors for business with 2,150 slot machines and 150 table games. Resorts World already had a 5000-slot machine parlor at Aqueduct Race Track in Queens, New York.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission Chairman Stephen Crosby looks to these new casinos as a way to win back the money that has been gambled in Connecticut over the years. His estimate of the tax revenue the state lost to gamblers crossing state lines was $250 million.
