Native American Indian Tribes Gives MGM Resorts Resistance

MGM Resorts is inches to open its Springfield facility. The $950 million MGM Springfield is set to open its doors in September. The Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts is now working hard to ensure that no other facility comes up. Even as the resort continues with plans to open, local tribes are crying. The Mashantucket Pequot and the Mohegan Native tribes say their businesses are at risk. Also, this is not the first time the two native tribes are raising their voices. They start way back when MGM Resorts starts to build MGM Springfield facility.

Why Are Native American Indian Tribes Giving Resistance?

After several battles with some ending in the courts, the tribes let it go. They start to pursue other channels. This time, they have hopes that the circuit will help. Of course, it seems that it will work. The channel these tribes choose is to build a satellite casino at East Windsor. The aim is to control the amount of money that may flow north to Springfield. But the Native tribes’ channel meets with opposition. This time, it is from MGM Springfield. According to MGM lawyers, the state is acting in contravention of the 1993 Act. The legal team argues that for any facility to be built there must be a successful bidding process.

Office of State Ethics in Connecticut

The two tribes do not do this. Besides, the legal team says that the state is expanding into an off-sovereign land. If this should go on, the lawyers argue, there should be a public vote. Above all, this is not what the state does. Office of State Ethics in Connecticut says that to get the opinions, MGM spends a lot. In fact, the office says that the casino company spends $3.8 million in 2017. The aim is to get people to talk about the opinions. Andrew Doba, the spokesman for the two tribes, says that MGM is showing what they are. They are willing to spend whatever they can to prevent casino expansion in Connecticut .

“It’s par for the course that MGM is showing month after month. Yes, year after year, they show their true colors. They are willing to spend ungodly amounts of money. The aim is to prevent Connecticut casino expansion. They want to stop us from taking the logical and necessary steps to protecting jobs and revenue,” Andrew says.

Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun

The Native tribes’ two other facilities are in the southeastern part. Revenue from the two resorts, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun go to the state. Besides, the hotels are the most significant source of employment for tribal members.

By building a facility in East Windsor, the Native tribes want to ensure no money flows to Springfield. The proposed site for the new facility is approximately 13 miles from MGM’s new casino MGM Springfield.

But they are quick to the point that they want to protect two things. One of the things the governor says they want to protect is people’s jobs. The other thing they are keen to see it remain within is revenue. As things are, the Las Vegas casino company will continue lobby.
