Low Demand Closes Las Vegas Hotels Mid-Week

The recent surge in positive coronavirus cases continues to impact the struggling Las Vegas casino industry. Unfortunately, low demand is closing Las Vegas hotels mid-week. As more and more states urge residents to avoid travel during the holiday season, these impacts will most likely continue.

Las Vegas is still reeling from the original shutdown back in March. Every Nevada land-based casino remained shuttered until early June. Once opened, Las Vegas casinos have been dealing with limited capacity as a health and safety protocol.

Why Is Low Demand Closing Las Vegas Hotels Mid-Week?

While the local business did bounce back somewhat, Las Vegas is still missing out on a huge tourism base tied to air travel. It has also been hurt by the continued lack of business meetings and conventions. The casinos most vulnerable to this situation reside on the famous Las Vegas Strip.

According to industry sources close to PlaySlots4RealMoney.com, Mandalay Bay and The Mirage are the latest resorts to trim operational hours. More than a few Las Vegas hotels have decided to close mid-week.

While the casinos themselves will remain open, booking a room mid-week is getting tougher to do. The overall lack of demand is the driving force. This is especially prevalent among the number of people flying into town.

Air traffic in and out of McCarran International Airport has been severely impacted by the continued coronavirus pandemic. Given the recent spike in cases on a national scale, the situation could actually get worse.
Thanksgiving is one of the biggest travel holidays of the year. Yet, this year’s holiday will see far fewer people making a trip out of town.

Mandalay Bay and the Mirage recently announced that their hotels will close mid-week. Starting on Nov. 30, the hotels will be closed from Tuesday through Thursday at noon. This will not have any impact on their casinos as well as other resort amenities.

The shutdown appears to be temporary with plans to resume regular hours after December. MGM Resorts owns both of these properties. It released the following company statement:

“While we do not currently expect the midweek hotel closures to remain past December, we will continue evaluating business levels to determine how long they are in effect.”

Park MGM is also located on the Las Vegas Strip. This hotel is only accepting reservations for the weekend. Caesars Entertainment has followed suit with two Strip properties. They are The LINQ and Planet Hollywood.

The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino is located just off the Strip. It has remained closed since the initial shutdown in mid-March. Plans are in place to reopen on Dec. 22. Following the New Year’s holiday, the hotel will only be open on weekends.

One of Wynn Resorts’ top casino properties on the Strip is Encore. The hotel is currently closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Business meetings and conventions account for most of the mid-week hotel traffic during normal conditions. The weekday occupancy rate in Las Vegas dipped to 38.5 percent in September. This is according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. It topped 66.1 percent on the weekends.
