Wynn Las Vegas is now taking added measures to keep its security guards safe. Local news sources with ties to VegasInternationalHotel.com relayed details on the new security measures.
The casino guards will be outfitted with ballistic body armor. This change is being made after review of the existing security protocols in place. The Wynn hotel-casino decided to enhance these protocols with the addition of body armor.
Why Does The Las Vegas Wynn Casino Equips Security Guards With Ballistic Body Armor?
This change is mainly tied to the recent death of a security officer at the casino. That member of the staff was shot and killed in a murder-suicide. A casino employee shot the guard in the employee parking garage before killing himself.
The incident took place earlier this month. The victim was recently identified as 31-year old Yoseph Almonte. He was a local Las Vegas resident. His death was the result of multiple gunshot wounds. The other casino employee involved in this crime was 42-year old Reggie Taggert. The shooting took place on Tuesday, March 9 around 5:45 p.m. local time.
Wynn wasted little time in making this change to address this extremely unfortunate turn of events. Taggert had failed to report to work for a few days in a row. Upon his return, security performed a routine welfare check and that is when the shooting occurred.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrived on the scene to find one deceased person on the ground with gunshot wounds. The police have described this as an isolated incident. There was no added threat to public safety at that time.
The following statement was released in accordance with the police response by homicide detective Ray Spencer:
“Anytime you have violence on the Las Vegas Strip, you’re going to have a heavy police presence.”
Matt Maddox is the CEO of Wynn Resorts. He released an official company statement later that night. It included the following comments:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred this evening. We have reached out to the families of our two employees to offer our condolences and assistance during this difficult time.”
Mr. Almonte was killed while performing a routine safety check. Because that employee did miss some shifts, the security check was triggered. This happened when Taggert used his employee card to enter the parking garage.
The security guard approached Taggert around the side of his car before he opened fire.
In speaking to the victim’s wife, it was uncovered that Almonte had expressed an interest in wearing a bulletproof vest.
It was also reported that Wynn had been reluctant to offer security personnel ballistic body armor. It was considered to be a bad look for arriving guests. That stance quickly changed in light of this deadly crime.
It was also reported that two unarmed employees were also present at the time. Onlookers suggested that Almonte placed himself between Taggert and the duo. That act of heroism may have saved those two lives that day.
