Two weeks following a cyberattack, the Menominee Casino in Keshena, Wisconsin has reopened. Daniel Hanson is the Wisconsin Tribal Casino property’s general manager. He turned to Facebook on Friday, June 25 to update the situation.
As of then, the Wisconsin Tribal Casino was open.
However, table games and bingo games were still unavailable. In a prepared statement, Hanson was quoted as saying:
“Our team has been and continues to work diligently to provide an entertainment experience that is secure and enjoyable. We are confident in the measures we have taken to reopen and are excited to invite you back to our casino for gaming.”
He also added:
“We separately continue to work hard to restore operations at our hotel, restaurant, gift shop and Thunderbird complex. We appreciate your patience and are thrilled to welcome you back.”
The casino was able to get the Forest Island Restaurant and Spirit Island Lounge open with limited menus. Both venues were only accepting cash as of the end of last week.
This issue is traced back to an attempted external cyberattack on the Wisconsin Tribal Casino resort’s computer system. The end result was various technical difficulties that needed to be resolved.
Hansen mentioned that his team was working with local law enforcement, the FBI and cybersecurity experts. The casino also brought in forensic experts as part of the investigation. As of June 25, there was no further information on who might be behind those attacks.

Cyberattacks have been in the news headlines lately. The biggest case was the recent issues with the Colonial Pipeline. The attack at Menominee was first detected by an IT employee. They quickly shut things down to avoid any further damage. Computer engineers were brought in to confirm the cyberattack. Later, law enforcement joined the investigation.
Mr. Hanson did mention that no sensitive information appeared to be accessed. He added that no information was taken or compromised given the short amount of time involved. Nonetheless, the damage from the breach was enough to warrant the closing that dragged on for two weeks.
Other cyberattacks in recent months have targeted CNA Financial, McDonalds, JBS Insurance and other corporate entities. The Colonial Pipeline attack was tied to ransomware as well.
