New Louisiana Casino Proposal Eyes Hammond Location

The casino industry for real money gambling continues to expand in states with existing gambling operations. According to an Associated Press report recently posted on NOLA.com, a new casino in Hammond is in the works for the state of Louisiana. Based in Los Angeles, Peninsula Pacific is hoping to build a new hotel and casino in Tangipahoa Parrish in Louisiana. It would consist of a 200-room hotel and a casino floor that would house 800 slot machines. According to this AP report, the company’s plans also include an indoor/outdoor entertainment venue, a market buffet set up as a farmer’s market and a possible fishing dock to host bass fishing tournaments.

When Is A New Louisiana Casino Proposal Coming To The Hammond Location?

The details of this plan were released earlier this month when company officials met with local officials and residents in Hammond. Peninsula Pacific already owns one of the state’s 15 available licenses for riverboat casino gambling. Its new plans involve moving the DiamondJacks Casino & Hotel in Bossier City to the Hammond location.

Company CEO Brent Stevens has commented that the new location would attract some of the gambling traffic that currently goes to casinos in Mississippi. In this report, it was noted that Stevens told WBRZ, “We want to bring it to a place where we can capture some of the migration that is going to Mississippi.” The main issue that Peninsula Pacific is facing involves both legislative and voter approval.

A Deeper Breakdown Of The Casino Floor Plan

In a deeper breakdown of the casino plans in this report, the overall square footage of the gaming floor would reach 27,000 feet. Along with the 800 slot machines, there would be 25 card tables. Stevens noted that the initial plans call for a 200-room hotel. He also mentioned that he is actively looking for some other developers willing to expand the hospitality side of the project with two additional hotel properties at this same location.

The economic impact on the local economy could be substantial with an additional 500 permanent jobs averaging $35,000 a year plus benefits. The overall price tag for this Louisiana casino and hotel is estimated to be $100 million, and it is targeted for a more rural part of the parish between Highway 445 and the Tangipahoa River.

An Application Has Been Filed With The US Army Corps of Engineers For Permit.

The recent meeting in Hammond attracted close to 70 people with some of the most significant concerns revolving around traffic, crime and potential drainage issues. An application has been filed with the US Army Corps of Engineers for a permit. The plan calls for a drainage field that would meet the specifications for a 200-year flood with the use of duel retention ponds. As far as the area’s traffic concerns, company officials placed an estimate of 3800 additional vehicles using the same intersection that currently serves around 12,000 cars on a daily basis. They went on to add that the peak traffic for the casino would not impede the current traffic centered around people’s daily work commute.

The Hammond Star Mentioned The Plan Is Not Approved

As a follow up to this report, The Hammond Star went on to mention that if the plan is not approved, Peninsula Pacific would most likely opt to expand its DiamondJacks location in Bossier City.
