While gambling is a lot of fun, people should always know their priorities. And, there’s no bigger priority than one’s family and kids. However, it seems that, unfortunately, not everyone feels this way. The latest news from Arizona is just the latest case of parents neglecting their children as they go gambling.
A Glendale Man Arrested for Leaving Children in the Car while Gambling
Last week, a man from Glendale was tossed in jail after leaving his two kids in the car in front of the casino while he was gambling inside. All this happened on Thursday morning, near Scottsdale, outside Casino Arizona. According to the police, Keo Bunchhor, aged 39, was arrested after he drove to Scottsdale with his 5-year-old and 2-year-old kids in the car with him. As he arrived at the casino, Bunchhor went inside to gamble and left his children inside the locked vehicle.
Just Went in “to Get a Cookie”
Luckily, a man who was walking by noticed the kids in the car around 9:45 am and immediately notified the local police. As police arrived at the scene, on rear window was rolled down. An officer approached the car and spoke to the older kid who said that their father had just gone into the real money Arizona casino to buy a cookie. At that point, the two kids have been in the car for over half an hour with the vehicle engine running. The temperature outside at that time was around 86 degrees. Fortunately, as the police arrived just in time, none of the kids was harmed.
Gambler Charged with Child Abuse
After checking the casino security cameras, the police officers identified Bunchor inside the casino and went on to apprehend him. According to the officers, the father admitted to having a gambling problem and stated he was trying to win money to pay the rent. Police notified the child services and got in contact with the mother who soon arrived at the casino to pick up the kids. Keo Bunchhor was taken to jail and charged with two accounts of child abuse, a class 5 felony. The bond was set at $5,000.
Similar Incidents Nationwide
This is not the first time something like this has happened and it seems that it’s becoming a worrying trend. Earlier this month, a similar incident happened in Des Plaines. Two kids, ages 3 and 5, were left in the car in front of the Rivers Casino while their father was at the AZ casino’s sportsbook. Fortunately, one of the casino safety guards noticed what was going on and informed the police. The father, 38-year-old Esteban Meraz from Chicago, was arrested and charged with two counts of endangering the life or well-being of a kid.
Last year in April, a doctor from Floride showed similar neglect for her children as she left them unattended in a vehicle while she was inside the casino, gambling. Dr. Marieny Elena Guimera-Revelo was apprehended for playing poker in Seminole Hard Rock Casino while her 3 and 11-years-old waited in a locked car.
