Louisville doesn’t have a casino, but it does offer perhaps the world’s greatest gambling spectacle.
Louisville is a beautiful, historic city on the banks of the Ohio River known for producing Louisville Sluggers, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and the Kentucky Derby, a little horse race in which wagers are placed on “the most exciting two minutes in sports.”
Despite its title as the gambling capital of the world, Louisville does not have a casino in the classic sense of a Las Vegas-style facility with numerous slots, craps, blackjack and other table games. Kentucky is one of just a few states without commercial or Native American casinos.
There’s a contemporary-looking pseudo-casino called Derby City Gaming (more about that below), as well as some Kentucky racetracks with “historical racing machines” for you to race on.
Residents and visitors looking for a casino to play slots, craps, or blackjack should travel south across the Ohio River to Indiana, where there is a large casino resort less than 10 miles from downtown Louisville (as the crow flies).
It’s a 15-mile drive from downtown Louisville. (More about that later).
Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino, located in Sellersburg, Indiana, is the only casino in Louisville’s immediate vicinity.
Next to an open field, it is on the banks of the Ohio River in a beautiful rural area that is diametrically opposed to the Las Vegas Strip and most other casino settings you’re probably familiar with.
While Louisville is just 15 miles from Caesars Southern Indiana, it’ll take you anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes to get there because you’ll have to drive over the Sherman Minton Bridge into New Albany, Indiana, before heading south on Highway 111. (There are no closer bridges).
The old casino, previously known as “Caesars Indiana” and now called “The Horseshoe,” was the largest riverboat in the United States when it opened in 1998. The current casino, which is fully on land, is now the biggest.
It’s also a lovely contemporary structure. The $90 million casino, which opened in December 2019, has 110,000 square feet.
It’s a Caesars Entertainment property, so use your Caesars Rewards Card at any of the 1,100 slot machines/video poker machines to get free play.
Rather than historic racing cars, these are genuine slot machines such as Wheel of Fortune, Hot Shot progressives, themed-based slots like “The Hangover,” “Willy Wonka,” and the like.
There are 70 table games to choose from, including Blackjack, Let-it-Ride, roulette, Pai-gow, and tiny baccarat. Craps is also available with 100x odds thanks to legislation.
The 16-table poker room features low limit hold’em and no-limit Texas hold’em games, which I prefer. They also host World Series of Poker satellite tournaments.
The new Caesars Events Center, located in Las Vegas, can seat over 1,200 individuals and hosts concerts, magicians, and other attractions.
Restaurants And Hotel
The hotel’s 503 rooms were all refurbished in the spring of 2017.
There are several dining choices available, ranging from a coffee bar to – on the higher end – Jack Binion’s Steak, in addition to the spa, shops, bars and lounges.
There are now four fast-casual eateries in the Piazza area.
Guests of the hotel can use a four-story parking structure with a capacity of 976 automobiles, in addition to the huge five-level garage for casino visitors. Both have inside walkways to the casino and are free to park in.
Find them at 11999 Casino Center Drive in Elizabeth, IN. 47117. Call them at (866) 676-7463, or visit their website at Caesars.com/Caesars Southern Indiana .
Churchill Downs, the owner of Derby City Gaming, commissioned the renovation of an existing facility on Poplar Level Road in Louisville.
The current structure is decorated with Kentucky Derby artifacts and motifs, including a rose ceiling. It contains 1,000 vintage racing machines.
Lil’Wagners and Railbirds’ Hot Chicken are Derby City Gaming’s two restaurants.
To play, you must be 21 years old or older, and there is plenty of free parking, with nearly 1,200 spaces.
The Horseshoe (black pin on the map) lacks competition, as it is only 15 miles from Louisville. In fact, most of the next closest casinos are located in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Belterra Casino Resort in Florence, Indiana, is the nearest among these.
It’s 66 miles northeast of Louisville and about an hour and a half drive on I-71. It is located just across the Ohio River from the city of Cincinnati, which is 66 kilometers to the northeast.
