In the 1970s, people started taking white lions and lions that had the white lion gene out of the wild. They put them in places like circuses and zoos. Some were used for hunting and breeding.
Nobody had ever seen white lions in their natural habitat before. But now, some of them are part of a special program called the Global White Lion Protection Trust. They were put back into nature and they can take care of themselves without any help from people. They are making babies too!
In 2004, the GWLPT started a project to bring white lions back into the wild. They took baby lions that were born in captivity and put them with tawny lions that lived in nature. After this, white cubs were born in Timbavati Private Nature Reserve and Nwanetsi Area of Kruger National Park.
The Global White Lion Protection Trust
The Global White Lion Protection Trust’s website says there are only 13 white lions living in the wild. That might not seem like a lot, but the Trust has done a great job of helping them go back to where they should be.
Linda Tucker created the GWLPT. It is a non-profit organization that protects lions in South Africa, especially white lions. They also help develop and keep traditional beliefs that see these animals as special.
People in the area think that the white lion is important. It is like how people in India think of Brahman Cattle, or how people in Burma protect white elephants, or how there is a Spirit Bear in Canada. The GWLPT believes that the white lion must be protected because it is special and valuable.
Chris McBride and the white lions of Timbavati
Chris McBride loves studying animals. He lived in Timbavati and other places in Africa. While he was doing his MSc degree at the University of California, two white lion cubs were born into the pride he was watching. He wrote a book about it called The White Lions of Timbavati which has been translated into 8 different languages and made into a movie.
The McBride Family had three white cubs. One was a boy and the other was a girl. They named them Tombi, which means girl, and Temba, which means hope. The third cub was not white. They called it Vela because it came as a surprise.
