As the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage on in many parts of the world, governments have resorted to lockdowns. This is in hopes of slowing down the spread. The first round of widespread lockdowns took place last March. The tactic is once again being used in certain extreme situations.
Why Was The Malaysia’s RWG Casino Complex Unaffected By Government Lockdown?
Malaysia has released an Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) has part of this country’s fight against COVID-19. According to a company release, Resorts World Genting will not be impacted. This is the casino resort at Genting Highlands near Kuala Lumper. This is the capital of Malaysia.
இது casino is part of Genting Malaysia Berhad as a major gambling operator in that region. An EMCO is the strictest form of lockdowns that the country has employed to fight the spread of COVID-19.
The current order impacts Amber Court and Ria Apartments until Jan. 16. All visits and travel to these areas is restricted. Local citizens are confined to their individual properties.
Armed security forces have been deployed and all businesses have been closed.
RWG clarified that the company’s gambling and hospitality facilities are located outside of the affected zone. They remain open for business pending any extension of the current EMCO.
As part of the company statement, it was relayed that the first case of COVID-19 was reported on Nov. 24. The operator also stated that “its safety measures are sufficient to guarantee a safe environment for both guests and workers.” The company has vowed “to keep the resort safe. It is requiring that “all employees, including third-party employees and contractors be tested and screened on a regular basis.”
The Malaysia casino resort is Genting’s only licensed property in the country. It clarified that its coronavirus testing protocols are thorough.
It includes “antibody and more recently antigen tests on employees.”
Genting added that these protocols are in “full compliance with the Malaysian government’s standard operating procedures.”
The first shutdown impacted RWG operations from March 18 until June 19. It has been open with reduced capacity since then. This resulted in a second quarter loss. The reported net loss carried over to the third quarter as well.
Losses in revenue were not limited to this region of the world. The shutdowns impacted business in the UK, Egypt and the US. Resorts World New York City remained shuttered into early September.
The Genting Group also released the following company statement:
“Although we believe the worst is over, with full lockdown on economies not likely to recur, earnings are only expected to recover slowly. We reckon the impact of economic fallout on consumer sentiment should continue to affect spending on non-essential and discretionary activities. As such, we think full recovery is more plausible in FY2022 for Genting Malaysia.”
Optimism for a quicker recovery covering the entire casino industry is tied to the coronavirus vaccine. This could help the overall process over the coming year. Spread rates are still high across the globe through a second wave of infections.
